Detox With Cilantro Smoothies

Most of us hear cilantro and think tacos, guacamole and other similar foods. However, what some people may not know is that cilantro actually comes from the coriander seed. That's right, the background, mellow spice is actually related to the bold and assertive cilantro. They are the same plant, yet they contain different flavor profiles. It's pretty neat.

The versatility of the coriander seed and it's cilantro leaves is incredible. Cilantro reaches far beyond uses in Mexican or South American cuisine. It's actually native to the Mediterranean and Asia Minor (Turkey) and can be found in dishes from around the world. It is used to enhance flavors of vegetables, fruits, soups, sauces and more. So why don't we hear about how awesome it is in smoothies?! It's not what one normally first considers when creating a tasty and nutritious blended drink. But trust us, you should.

Here's a simple recipe you can try at home:

cilantro and pineapple smoothie recipe

Ingredients:

- 3/4 cup water

- Juice from 1 lime

- 1 cup mixed greens (kale, spinach)

- 1 cup pineapple chunks (fresh)

- 1/4 cup cilantro leaves

- pea sized amount of ginger

All you need to do is add ingredients to a blender and start to mix at a low speed. Once the ingredients have started to blend, turn up the speed and continue until smooth. You can even throw in 1/4 Avocado or a whole sliced banana. Whatever your favorite flavors, fruits or vegetables, there is most likely one that will mix in well with this basic recipe. Experiment to find your favorite personal choice and feel confident in your healthy decisions.

Cilantro is a great source of Vitamin K (potential bone mass building agent) and antioxidants especially the (important) flavonoid quercetin. And it's a more concentrated amount of antioxidants than in any fruit or vegetable. It's a super plant with super detoxifying benefits. And a regular intake of cilantro will help to reduce bad cholesterol, known as LDL, and increase good cholesterol, otherwise known as HDL (antioxidants for health and longevity).

It also contains fungicidal and anti-septic properties. These vibrant green leaves literally clean your system. Cilantro essential oil has even been found to aid in digestion and the production of digestive enzymes as well. It's not only for enhancing flavors, it's also enhancing your overall health. 4 grams of cilantro leaves contain only 1 calorie, 0 fat, 0 carbs and about 2-5% of the daily recommend dose of Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

Let's just say, the more you get to know cilantro, the more you will love it. And the more you will use it. The Grow.Bar system is an excellent way to get started. This will allow anyone to have access to the nutritious greens year round. You can grow them right in your own kitchen and harvest them at a micro-size, which is perfect for blending into smoothies (or mixing into salads or vegetable dishes). It's a engaging way to involve the whole family. And a way to easily motivate everyone you love to start enjoying the benefits of healthy cilantro consumption!
