Technology & Indoor Gardening: The Pros And Cons Of A Digital Home

“The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world ” (Michael Pollan - The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals ).

Technology has certainly changed the way we garden, and in turn, also the way we eat. Although many modern technologies takes us away from nature, there are still plenty of other innovations that help us improve our interaction with nature. As a microgreen growing company, we agree with Pollan and believe that if we make the effort - it's possible to be better citizens of the planet.

The Grow.Bar® System - @grow.bar

The Grow.Bar® growing system is our model of two worlds colliding. The bar seamlessly blends the worlds of gardening and technology through healthy and productive action. Just like people who are different can work together in harmony, our grow system's wireless and app control work in perfect synthesis with the organic grow media to create something awesome. Although it's not the same experience as outdoor growing, we would never sacrifice quality or consistency. You can still garden indoors and produce high-quality crops. Our microgreen seeds, fertilizers and other grow materials are all 100% organic. Even the wooden structures themselves are made from all-natural woods and contain no harsh chemicals or stains.

Because indoor growing is different than outdoor gardening, of course there are pros and cons.  The infographic below explores both sides of the gardening spectrum, and the effects technology has on the process.

The pro list continues if you look beyond the process of gardening itself. Not only has technology changed general gardening methods, it's also made it easier to bring them inside. This may be a necessary option for some people. And the presence of plant life and the process of gardening inside your home provide a long list of additional benefits:

  • Improved air quality
  • Boosted levels of empathy, care and concern
  • Access to fresh, free cooking ingredients
  • Healthier meal options and year-round produce
  • Less risk of chemical ingestion
  • Cost efficient alternative to a large outdoor garden
  • Acts as a conversation starter

You've likely heard the word "hydroponic" in regards to indoor growing. And while there are tons of hydroponic systems on the market, they do not offer the full benefits of products like the Grow.Bar®. We understand the importance of soil-grown vegetation and plant-life (further detailed in 5 Reasons To Choose Soil Over Hydroponic Growing). And we know that vegetables grown in soil will have a higher brix rating, thus being more nutrient dense and healthier. It's a simple and conscious way to cultivate a healthier life for you and your family.

The Grow.Bar's technology elements reside in it's low-maintenance, app-control abilities and in the wireless system's control devices. The idea is to have technology interact as little as possible with the growth process, making it easy for the user and keeping it 100% natural. Of course, you won't be getting as much physical action as with an outdoor garden. Some may relish in the exercise that comes with outdoor garden upkeep and weeding, and the stimulation and health benefits that come from contact with dirt, soil and other organic life. However, there are plenty of people who do not have access to ample space for outdoor gardening, or that do not have a feasible amount of time to maintain such a n outdoor space.

You could also argue that high-tech grow systems for the home are not "design-friendly". And again we would draw your attention to the Grow.Bar's stylish, modern and classic structure. The bar is more than just a garden. Yes, it's a constant provider of tasty, flavorful and aromatic nutrition, but it's also a unique interior design element. Indoor gardens do not have to be messy or dirty, or look like a science experiment. Growing indoors with technology can be a clean, healthy and creative addition to your home.

In such a digital world, it's important to remember our connection to nature. It can be easy to spend entire days without organic contact, and this is extremely unhealthy and unnatural for the human being. The Grow.Bar® is a great way for busy families, city dwellers or apartments owners to integrate gardening in their everyday lives.
